Diet plays a vital role in the treatment of diabetes. The diet of diabetic patients need not be monotonous or unappetising. For the most part, the diet of a diabetic is similar to the diet of a normal person.
Do not add to or omit any food allowed in your meal plan.
Do not fast or over eat
Try to maintain body weight within the prescribed limit.
Since serum lipids are generally raised in diabetics one should be careful with the amount and nature of fat to be consumed.
Exercise should be an integral part of being a diabetics
Diabetic should have brisk walking, bicycling etc.
Exercise is recommended in a fairly controlled state, on an empty stomach, and regularly, at least five days a week. Those patients with eye, kidney, and heart problems should refrain from exercise and ask the doctor before doing so.
Diabetics should avoid sugar, jam (aerated drink), Horlicks, jelly, cakes, Bournvita, honey, sweets, pastries, chocolate, sweets (golabjamun, rasogolla, etc.), yolk, potato, ripe fruits (mango, jackfruit, sapeta), eggs, , Cashew, Cocondry nuts, mutton, cashew, coconut, ghee, butter, alcohol and smoking.
Cereals, rice, roti, fish, milk, cheese, chicken, and fried rice could be consumed in moderation by diabetic patients.
Some of the foods are:
Green leafy vegetables, tea (without sugar and artificial whitener), brinjal, ladies finger, lemon water, cauliflower, tomato soup, green papaya, bitter gourd, ridge gourd, beans, drumstick, capsicum, tinda, cucumber, dhania patta, mint leaves.
Foot care- Use shoes always when you move out and use appropriate footwear in the house. Never walk barefoot.
Wash your feet with soap and water at bedtime and apply vaseline.
Nail Care: Trim your nails with nail cutters carefully. Never use a shaving blade.
